S.D. Winter Wheat Planting Lags Averages

For the week ending Sunday, warm temperatures and scattered rains were experienced across the State, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Although there were isolated reports of standing water, soybean harvest was ongoing and corn silage cutting concluded. There were 5.5 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 8 percent very short, 22 short, 68 adequate, and 2 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 7 percent very short, 28 short, 64 adequate, and 1 surplus.

Corn condition rated 4 percent very poor, 13 poor, 30 fair, 45 good, and 8 excellent. Corn dented was 96 percent, near 94 last year and the five-year average of 95. Mature was 64 percent, ahead of 58 last year and 57 average. Harvested was 6 percent, equal to last year, and behind 11 average.

Soybeans condition rated 3 percent very poor, 10 poor, 26 fair, 50 good, and 11 excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves was 88 percent, near 85 last year, and ahead of 83 average. Harvested was 11 percent, behind 17 both last year and average.

Sorghum condition rated 0 percent very poor, 3 poor, 42 fair, 53 good, and 2 excellent. Sorghum coloring was 99 percent, ahead of 92 last year, and near 95 average. Mature was 67 percent, well ahead of 37 last year and 42 average. Harvested was 13 percent, ahead of 3 last year, and near 12 average.

Sunflowers condition rated 1 percent very poor, 5 poor, 35 fair, 56 good, and 3 excellent. Sunflowers ray flowers dried was 80 percent, behind 88 last year and 93 average. Bracts turning yellow was 51 percent, behind 62 last year, and well behind 75 average. Bracts turning brown was 15 percent, near 16 last year.

Alfalfa hay condition rated 8 percent very poor, 20 poor, 47 fair, 24 good, and 1 excellent. Alfalfa hay third cutting was 80 percent, near 84 last year, and behind 86 average. Fourth cutting was 43 percent, ahead of 32 last year.

Winter wheat planted was 42 percent, well behind 65 last year, and behind 53 average. Emerged was 3 percent, behind 15 last year and 10 average.

Pasture and range conditions rated 8 percent very poor, 18 poor, 36 fair, 36 good, and 2 excellent. Stock water supplies rated 7 percent very short, 21 short, 70 adequate, and 2 surplus.
