USDA Awards 3-Year Grant to S.D. Team Nutrition
South Dakota Ag Connection - 09/26/2016

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service awarded a $492,146 three-year grant to South Dakota Team Nutrition, managed cooperatively by SDSU Extension and SD Department of Education, Child & Adult Nutrition Services Office. The funding was part of $6.7 million in grants awarded to states to help expand and enhance training for school nutrition and child care professionals working to support healthy environments.

"We are really excited about the three-year grant period because it means that there will be many opportunities for South Dakota schools to apply for funding that will help them foster and support health and wellness for their students," said Megan Jacobson, SDSU Extension Nutrition Field Specialist and SD Team Nutrition Co-Project Director.

Some of those opportunities will include: the Smarter Lunchrooms Movement, Farm to School, Power Chef Challenge and school breakfast promotional initiatives.

A big component of this grant will be providing support and outreach to schools.

"We appreciate the opportunities provided by the Team Nutrition grants and we know that many schools take advantage of the grants and education opportunities. SDSU staff are a natural partner to carry out this work," said Sandra Kangas, Office Administrator - Child & Adult Nutrition Services/SD Department of Education.

The grant funding opportunities available to schools will be posted on the SD DOE's Team Nutrition website.

In order to receive Team Nutrition grant funds, your school must enroll by completing this form as a Team Nutrition School.

We encourage you to check your school's status on the Team Nutrition website to provide updates or enroll.
