SDSU Extension Welcomes New Beef Nutrition Specialist
South Dakota Ag Connection - 09/20/2023
The SDSU Extension beef team is on a new path with Madison Kovarna stepping in as a Beef Nutrition Field Specialist. Based in the Sioux Falls Regional Center, Madison is set to offer programs and research-driven solutions to cattle farmers all over South Dakota. Her role will also encompass forging ties with various entities to solidify the beef industry's foundation.
Kovarna, a seasoned cow/calf and crop operations professional, has a bachelor's in animal science, minor in agricultural business, and master's in ruminant nutrition. She has been involved in her family's operations and serves as an assistant manager at the SDSU Cow-Calf Education and Research Facility.
Sandy Smart from SDSU Extension highlights Madison’s rich experience, including her insightful graduate research on the effects of weather on water consumption in beef bulls and heifers. This knowledge is invaluable, especially considering potential future climate changes impacting beef production.
South Dakota's beef domain is impressive, boasting 3.5 million cattle as per recent USDA surveys. The SDSU Extension team, enriched with Madison's addition, continues its dedicated support to the state’s cattle producers, offering expertise in various domains like nutrition and genetics.
