Underground Research Lab to Host State Fair Activities
South Dakota Ag Connection - 08/29/2016

Staff from the Sanford Underground Research Facility will host a variety of activities during this year's South Dakota State Fair.

Communications and Education staff will be on site in the Arts and Education Building from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, and Friday, Sept. 2, to answer questions about what is happening at the mine.

Additional activities include:

-- Exploring the Unseen (Arts and Education Building)-- Scientists at Sanford Lab use indirect evidence to reason about things too small to see, too remote to reach and otherwise difficult to detect. Things like dark matter, a mystery particle that is much more abundant than anything in the universe, but has not (yet) been detected because it does not emit light. Students will have a choice of activities to explore indirect evidence. Appropriate for all grade levels.

-- A Day in the Life of a Sanford Lab Scientist (Women's Building Auditorium)-- Presentations for students attending Education Day on Sept. 1 and 2 at 11:15 a.m. Working a mile underground is unique. How do the scientists who work at Sanford Lab everyday get underground? What do they wear and what do they do? This presentation will have students playing scientist in an underground research laboratory. Appropriate for all grade levels.

-- Deep Science: An Introduction to the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead (Women's Building Auditorium)-- A public presentation about the underground research facility now and in the future on Sept. 1 at 5 p.m. This presentation by Constance Walters, communications director at the Sanford Underground Research Facility, will introduce the audience to the current and future projects taking place deep underground in the former Homestake Mine and discuss the impact on the state of South Dakota, both economically and educationally. Appropriate for everyone.
