Urban Wood Utilization Workshops Planned
South Dakota Ag Connection - 07/27/2016

SDSU Extension in cooperation with the South Dakota Department of Agriculture, McCrory Gardens, the City of Rapid City and the Rapid City Urban Forestry Board is hosting two urban wood utilization workshop summer 2016.

The first is on Aug. 6 from 9:30 a.m. to noon (MST) at the City Maintenance Yard, (2919 Canyon Lake Drive, Rapid City). The second workshop will be held Aug. 9 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. (CST) at McCrory Gardens, (631 22nd Ave, Brookings).

"Too often we cut down mature or over-mature urban and windbreak trees and burn or bury the wood. Considering the potential value in some trees is important so don't accidentally burn or bury money," said John Ball, SDSU Extension Forestry Specialist.

These outdoor workshops will cover the basics of turning trees into valuable products. Discussions and demonstrations will cover how logs are scaled (measured,) the economics of setting up a mill, the drying process and maintaining blades.

Participants will be able to examine and watch a portable mill operation. The workshops will also address how to utilize wood infested with insects and diseases to avoid further spread of these pests.

No pre-registration is required but people may contact John Ball by email for more information.
