Symposium tackles rising beef production costs
South Dakota Ag Connection - 01/24/2024

SDSU Extension is joining forces with North Dakota State University Extension to conduct the Dakota Alternative Beef Cow Systems Symposium. This event is aimed at helping farmers and ranchers handle escalating costs associated with pastures and forages for beef cattle feeding. The symposium includes two in-person events and one virtual session via Zoom.

Considering increasing feed costs exerting financial pressure on cattle producers, experts from SDSU Extension, NDSU Extension, and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign will deliver research-based insights and strategies.

The symposium will feature presentations on innovative methods to replace forages, effective creep-feeding in confinement systems, adaptable grazing strategies, and an analysis of alternative cow-calf systems versus pasture-based systems.

Warren Rusche, SDSU Extension Feedlot Specialist, highlights the significant rise in pasture and forage costs in recent years. This symposium forms a part of a broader research and outreach initiative to guide beef producers in making informed decisions about managing feed resources for their herds.

The South Dakota in-person session is scheduled for February 6, 2024, at the Huron Event Center, while the North Dakota session will be on February 7 at the Jamestown Civic Center. The virtual event is set for February 7 via Zoom. Each session runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Registration, necessary by February 5, costs $25 per person. Attendees will also gain access to a recording of the symposium.

To register, visit the SDSU Extension Events page and look for "symposium." This event presents a crucial learning opportunity for beef cattle producers facing the challenge of rising feed costs.
