May Graduate Lands Internship in New York

May South Dakota State University graduate Jordan Otta secured a summer internship with global advertising agency FCB Health in New York City after being selected from a pool of candidates from across the country.

"I am beyond excited," said Otta, who majored in advertising with minors in marketing and journalism. "I am working for the nation's leading pharmaceutical advertising agency. My fellow interns are coming from places like Harvard and Cal Berkeley, so to have my resume be recognized as competitive with students from those schools feels really good."

Otta, who is from Sioux Falls, will begin the eight-week internship Monday, after competing in this week's American Advertising Federation's National Student Advertising Competition for SDState's advertising competition team. He found the internship through the Marketing and Advertising Education summer internship program supported by the Association of National Advertisers Educational Foundation.

"Getting an internship in New York City isn't easy," said Roxanne Lucchesi, a professor of advertising and the advertising competition team adviser. "It's where everyone wants to work, so there is a lot of competition. A lot of entry-level jobs in advertising start as internships, so this is a best-case scenario for starting a career in New York. The internship introduces him to the market and provides him with the opportunity to demonstrate his skills."

Being hired by a global advertising firm such as FCB Health is a challenge in itself, but to even get the opportunity to interview, Otta had to make it into the MADE program. He took a personality test and recorded a video interview beyond the standard resume submission.

Once chosen to participate, Otta waited three weeks before hearing from two interested agencies and setting up interviews. After another brief application process following the interview, he was hired as an intern.

"I wanted to challenge myself and see how far I could really get in this industry," Otta said. "New York is really the place to be, at least within America, for advertising. I set a lofty goal and decided I was going to do whatever I needed to do to get there."

Otta completed a summer 2018 internship with Fresh Produce in Sioux Falls and worked at Daktronics. He is also a presenter on the 13-person team that qualified for one of the eight spots at the AAF's NSAC in Hollywood, Fla., and was involved on campus as the founding president of the SDSU chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America and member of the advertising club.
