USD to Hosts Annual Earth Days April 20-27

The sustainability program at the University of South Dakota presents Earth Days for the sixth year in a row. Over the course of seven days, a vast range of events is planned on- and off-campus, such as a keynote lecture, an Earth Day Fair, Green Thursday, a free movie showing, a book discussion in the Vermillion Public Library and a night sky hike in the Spirit Mound Historic Prairie.

This year's keynote on Monday, April 22 is a lecture and a music performance by Winona LaDuke and Annie Humphrey. LaDuke is a Native American activist and an advocate for environmental, women's and children's rights. Humphrey was named the 2018 Artist of the Year by the Native American Music Awards. LaDuke's lecture is titled "Building a Green Economy: Indigenous Strategies for a Sustainable Future," and original music from Humphrey will be integrated into the event.

"There are a few goals of Earth Days," explained Meghann Jarchow, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Sustainability and Environment and overall coordinator for Earth Days. "One of them is to increase awareness about environmental sustainability to people who are not as familiar with it. A second goal is to offer opportunities for like-minded people to come together. Third is to show people that there is a lot going on around environmental conservation and there are many opportunities to engage/participate in. Hopefully there is something for everyone."
