Wildfire Awareness Month Celebration to be held in Rapid City

The public is invited to join local fire protection agencies for an afternoon of fun-filled events to be held at Rapid City's Main Street Square on May 1 from 1-3 p.m.

This event will feature informative displays and children's activities. Participants will be able to learn about wildfire risks and prevention methods. Main Street Square activities will include:

-- Match Stick Forest: This demonstration will show the importance of pre-fire mitigation for your property, including how slope, tree spacing and topography can affect fire behavior.

-- Air Tanker Flying: Fly our "tanker planes" and learn about how tankers are used in wildland firefighting.

-- Dress Up Like A Firefighter: Gear up in fire safety equipment and learn about tools firefighters use to fight fires.

-- Fire Truck Tours: Ask wildland firefighters any questions you may have while looking at their fire response vehicles.

-- Fire Shelter Station: Discover what a fire shelter is and why firefighters carry them.

-- Smokey Bear Appearance: Come get your photo taken with Smokey Bear!

New this Year:

-- National Weather Service: Learn about how they forecast fire weather and what goes into a Red Flag Warning.

-- Outdoor Campus -- West: Utilizing "touch and feel" animal pelts, naturalists will explain exactly what happens to wildlife during wildland fire events.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard has proclaimed May as Wildfire Awareness Month in the State of South Dakota. This year's theme, "Do Your Part Before Wildfires Start," encourages homeowners to take simple steps to minimize the impacts of wildland fire. Wildfire Awareness Month is a collaborative effort between local, state and federal firefighting agencies.
