Black Hills Food Hub Awarded at 99th Spearfish Banquet
South Dakota Ag Connection - 02/22/2018

Black Hills Food Hub, an entity that has evolved to offer locally grown food from about 24 local producers to five cafeterias and restaurants in the region, received the Micropolitan Award at the 99th annual Spearfish Chamber Banquet and Awards Ceremony at the Spearfish Holiday Inn and Convention Center.

The food hub regularly coordinates local food deliveries from approximately two dozen producers, and five cafeterias/restaurants bring fresh local food to consumers and businesses throughout the region. BHSU provides internships for students to participate in local food efforts working on campus and with agricultural partners.

By delivering food directly from producers to area cafeterias, restaurants, service providers, and specialty stores, our mission is to aid in regional initiatives that broaden the availability of local foods to people of all demographics.

Black Hills State University (BHSU) has a legacy of local food. Early students participated in growing programs implemented by President Fayette Cook (in the 1900s). A group of 10 Holstein cows were kept where Cliff Papik Field is now and the campus had a garden and an apple orchard.

The BHSU campus is once again taking a leadership role by creating and housing the Black Hills Food Hub. The BHSU Spearfish Local logo at restaurants around town help residents find locally grown food.
