S.D. Soybean, Oat Stocks Up Double Digits from Last Year

South Dakota corn stocks in all positions on December 1, 2018 totaled 650 million bushels, down 2 percent from 2017, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Of the total, 460 million bushels are stored on farms, up 8 percent from a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 190 million bushels, are down 20 percent from last year.

Soybeans stored in all positions totaled 222 million bushels, up 32 percent from last year. Onfarm stocks of 110 million bushels are up 59 percent from a year ago, while off-farm stocks, at 112 million bushels, are up 12 percent from 2017.

All wheat stored in all positions totaled 68.3 million bushels, up 4 percent from a year ago. Onfarm stocks of 28.0 million bushels are up 6 percent from 2017, and off-farm stocks of 40.3 million bushels are up 3 percent from last year.

Sorghum off-farm stocks totaled 3.77 million bushels.

Oats stocks totaled 5.17 million bushels, up 31 percent from last year. On-farm stocks, at 3.80 million bushels, are up 58 percent from a year ago, while off-farm stocks, at 1.37 million bushels, are down 11 percent from 2017.

Barley off-farm stocks of 3,000 bushels are unchanged from a year ago. On-farm stocks totaled 190,0000 bushels.

Hay stocks on South Dakota farms totaled 5.35 million tons on December 1, 2018, up 4 percent from a year earlier.

Grain storage capacity in South Dakota totaled 1.16 billion bushels, up 35 million bushels from December 1, 2017. Total grain storage capacity is comprised of 730 million bushels of on-farm storage, up 20 million from last year, and 425 million bushels of off-farm storage, up 15 million bushels from 2017.
