Labor Department Hosting Apprenticeship Summit
South Dakota Ag Connection - 10/18/2018

The Department of Labor and Regulation (DLR) will host the Start Today SD Summit to promote Registered Apprenticeships on Nov. 13 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. CST at Mitchell Technical Institute.

Businesses, apprenticeship sponsors, policy makers, and workforce and education professionals are invited to attend at no cost. Online registration is available at https://www.starttodaysd.com/Summit2018.

"The Start Today SD Summit kicks off National Apprenticeship Week and will feature apprentice and sponsor testimonials," said state Labor Secretary Marcia Hultman. "We will also celebrate the success of all apprentices who earned an apprenticeship credential in the last year with a graduation ceremony."

Award recipients of the Start Today SD incentive funding will also be announced. Businesses could apply for up to a maximum of $30,000 in funding to help offset the initial start-up costs when developing a new apprenticeship program.

"The apprenticeship model is one potential solution to workforce shortages," said Secretary Hultman. "The summit will help educate those interested in learning more about the process and provide expert resources to answer questions."

DLR was recently awarded an $847,000 State Apprenticeship Expansion Grant from the U.S. Department of Labor's ApprenticeshipUSA program. The goal is to add 200 active apprentices by fall 2020.
