S.D. Corn, Sorghum, Soybeans and Hay Projected Up

Based on October 1 conditions, South Dakota's 2018 corn production is forecast at a record 851 million bushels, up 16 percent from last year's production, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Area to be harvested for grain, at 4.95 million acres, is down 3 percent from a year ago. Yield is forecast at a record 172 bushels per acre, up 27 bushels from last year.

Sorghum for grain is forecast at 14.8 million bushels, up 28 percent from last year. Area for harvest, at 190,000 acres, is up 12 percent from 2017. Yield is forecast at 78 bushels per acre, up 10 bushels from last year.

Soybean production is a record forecast at 281 million bushels, up 16 percent from last year. Area for harvest, at 5.61 million acres, is unchanged from 2017. Yield is forecast at a record 50 bushels per acre, up 7 bushels from last year.

All sunflowers production is forecast at 895 million pounds, down 13 percent from last year. Acreage for harvest, at 540,000 acres, is down 48,000 acres from 2017. Yield is forecast at 1,658 pounds per acre, down 100 pounds per acre from a year ago. Of the acres for harvest, non-oil sunflowers account for 45,000 acres and oil sunflowers account for 495,000 acres.

Alfalfa hay production, at 3.91 million tons, is up 49 percent from last year. Area for harvest, at 1.70 million acres, is up 13 percent from a year ago. Yield of 2.30 tons per acre, is up 0.6 ton from 2017. All other hay production, at 2.28 million tons, is up 5 percent from last year. Area for harvest, at 1.30 million acres, is down 19 percent from a year ago. Yield of 1.75 tons per acre, is up 0.4 ton from 2017.
