South Dakota Goes Online with Water Well Maps
South Dakota Ag Connection - 02/05/2016

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has added a new online interactive map showing water well locations throughout South Dakota. The map and related data are available through the department's interactive database maps online at denr.sd.gov/datagis.aspx.

"This data has proven to be some of the most popular data made available by DENR and is now available with map-based search features," said DENR Secretary Steve Pirner. "As part of the department's mission to manage and protect the state's ground water resources, DENR has accumulated more than 70,000 water well reports that are all now available for viewing online or downloading."

Well completion reports are prepared by well drillers detailing well construction, location, intended use and geologic and hydrologic information about the well site. Some of the reports in the database date back to the late 1800s.

The water well location information is used by property owners, developers, realtors and environmental consultants. Information can be searched for by well owner name, well driller name, well type, well depth, county or selecting a location on the map. The location of each well on the interactive map is based on the legal description provided on the well completion report.

The interactive well completion report map complements the department's interactive maps for oil and gas wells, state-owned observation wells, construction aggregate, spills, closed and active regulated storage tanks, recyclable materials, water right dry draw location notices, permitted solid waste facilities, lake levels and observation wells that have been available online. The maps show data from about:

-- 1,900 files for oil and gas holes and geologic logs from 96,595 other holes,

-- 1,500 observation wells measuring ground water levels,

-- 4,600 active and closed construction aggregate mines across the state,

-- 13,250 spill sites,

-- 5,000 closed and active regulated storage tanks,

-- 150 locations that take recyclable materials,

-- 97,620 filings for water right dry draw location notices,

-- 200 permitted solid waste facilities,

-- 167 lake levels, and

-- 1,556 observation wells.

The interactive maps can be accessed from the department's homepage at denr.sd.gov under "One-Stop Shops" and "Data & Mapping."
