Mid-Week Showers Slow S.D. Corn, Soybean Harvests

For the week ending Sunday, harvest advanced on generally favorable weather, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. However, corn and soybean harvest progress remains behind last year and average as mid-week showers slowed progress in some central and southeast locations. High grain moisture on late-planted corn and soybeans was also slowing progress for some producers. Fall-tillage and fertilizer applications began on harvested acres in parts of the State. There were 6.0 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 10 percent very short, 25 short, 63 adequate, and 2 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 8 percent very short, 31 short, 60 adequate, and 1 surplus.

Corn condition rated 4 percent very poor, 11 poor, 29 fair, 45 good, and 11 excellent. Corn harvested was 47 percent, behind 54 last year and the five-year average of 57.

Soybeans harvested was 89 percent, behind 94 last year, and near 93 average.

Sorghum harvested was 80 percent, well ahead of 56 last year, and ahead of 67 average.

Sunflowers condition rated 1 percent very poor, 5 poor, 33 fair, 57 good, and 4 excellent. Sunflowers bracts turning yellow was 97 percent. Bracts turning brown was 92 percent, near 95 last year. Harvested was 56 percent, ahead of 51 last year and 46 average. Winter wheat emerged was 82 percent, near 85 last year, but ahead of 64 average.

Pasture and range conditions rated 9 percent very poor, 18 poor, 38 fair, 33 good, and 2 excellent. Stock water supplies rated 8 percent very short, 22 short, 68 adequate, and 2 surplus.
