U.S. Welcomes Report on EU-U.S. Privacy Shield
USAgNet - 10/19/2017

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross welcomed the release of the European Commission's report on the first annual review of the functioning of the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield Framework. The report concludes that the framework continues to provide an adequate level of privacy protection under EU law and that the necessary structures have been implemented to ensure the functioning of the framework. The accompanying staff document details the work that the Department of Commerce, Federal Trade Commission, State Department, other U.S. federal agencies and EU partners have done during the past year to implement the Privacy Shield and outlines areas for continued cooperation in the year ahead.

"We have worked closely with our partners across the EU during the past year as we implemented the Privacy Shield program," said Ross. "That cooperative approach led to a stronger program and a successful first annual review held in late September. We look forward to continuing to work together with our colleagues on the European Commission and across all of the EU Member States as we continually strive to ensure that the Privacy Shield program serves all stakeholders well."

More than 2,500 organizations -- a number that continues to grow -- participate in the Privacy Shield program to transfer personal data from the EU to the United States in compliance with EU data protection laws.

The framework provides strong and enforceable protections for personal data, while supporting hundreds of billions of dollars in transatlantic commerce.
